Papini, who was detained by federal agents on March 3, accepted a plea agreement in which she agreed to admit guilt to charges of lying to a federal agent and mail fraud, according to her lawyer, William Portanova.
In a statement issued by Portanova, Papini said, “I am profoundly ashamed of myself for my actions and so sorry for the anguish I’ve caused my family, my friends, all the good people who needlessly suffered because of my narrative, and those who fought so hard to try to help me. “I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to make up for what I’ve done.”
The beginning of Papini’s account occurred on November 2, 2016, when she claimed to have gone for a run and was abducted by the two armed, masked Hispanic ladies. She claimed they tormented her, brandished her, and locked her up in a bedroom.
On Thanksgiving Day, 22 days later, she was discovered lost in a parking lot. Her family, which included her two young children, welcomed her back, and the people of Redding, who had been looking for her for days, mostly came together to support her.
However, the DOJ discovered that Papini had made up the incident after looking into her purported kidnapping.
Authorities with the Department of Justice stated in a press release following her arrest that Papini had actually been staying with a previous boyfriend in Costa Mesa on purpose and had injured herself to substantiate her lies.
According to the statement, therapy sessions and an ambulance ride related to Papini’s claimed staged kidnapping cost the California Victim’s Compensation Board more than $30,000.
Shasta County Sheriff Michael L. Johnson said in the release that the 22-day search for Sherri Papini and the subsequent five-year investigation into who is believed to have kidnapped her put a strain on public resources and made the public fearful for their safety, which they shouldn’t have had to.
